Yesterday I covered how and why to use trackbacks with a WordPress blog.
If you’re using a blogging program that doesn’t include the ability to automatically send trackbacks you can — and should — still use them for all of the same reasons. You’ll just have to do it manually.
Here’s how, in six simple steps:
1. Write your entry and save it in draft mode.
2. In a separate window, open the entry that you’re linking and sending a trackback on. Locate the Trackback URI. It may be set out fully where you can copy and paste it, or it may be in link form which requires you to right-click and copy the link location. (For example, notice how trackback URIs are links on entries here at BFTM.)
3. In a third window, open the WizbangTech Trackback pinger form in a separate tab. Paste the trackback URI into the first field.
4. Fill out the next three fields using information about your entry and your blog.
5. Type in an excerpt or summary of your entry. NOTE: I don’t recommend copying and pasting from your entry since this occasionally causes the text to appear garbled at the site you’re sending the trackback to.
6. Click “Submit trackback” and you’re done!
It’s a good idea to refresh the page with the entry to which you’re sending the trackback to see if it shows up. Sometimes there may be a delay, however, if the blogger moderates trackbacks. If you’re ever in doubt whether the trackback went through, despite receiving a confirmation that it did, it never hurts to send an email to the blogger you’ve linked and ask if it showed up in their queue.
So now that you see how simple it is there’s really no excuse not to send trackbacks. It’s good for your blog’s publicity, and it’s a great way to include your blog in the vast conversation otherwise known as the blogosphere.
