BlogCatalog Adds NewsFeed Widget

The folks at BlogCatalog keep churning out more and more useful applications. The latest is their “News Feed” widget, released in Beta today, which tracks your social networking activities along with your blog entries. (You can see mine in the right-hand sidebar.)

Now, if you run multiple blogs, you may have noticed the same thing that I have: your readers at one blog don’t necessarily visit your other blogs. Sometimes that’s because the other blogs cover a niche they’re just not interested in. Sometimes, though, it’s because they simply forget about your other blogs.

Sure, you could self-link your other blogs more often but that poses a risk of having Google view all of your blogs as essentially one… ruining your efforts to establish separate PR for each. BlogCatalog’s new little widget takes care of that: you don’t have to self-link now to let your readers know what you’re up to elsewhere. (Which is not to say you shouldn’t do it now and then!)

Another nifty use: you can use your NewsFeed to help promote your friends blog entries, too, without worrying if they’re relevant to your blog. Simply Twitter or Stumble them, or submit them to some other social networking site you’ve added to your BlogCatalog profile, and they’ll appear on your NewsFeed.

One tip: be sure to add your NewsFeed (and all of your similar blog widgets, for that matter) to the last section of your blog that loads. That way if they have service disruptions or loading delays it won’t affect your page loading times.
